Confinement efficacy of partial and full wrapped CFRP systems in RC column prototypes
Since the beginning of the nineties, fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) have been used to increase the load carrying capacity and the energy absorption capacity of reinforced concrete columns [1-5]. The high specific strength and stiffness, the low thickness and weight, and the high resistance to corrosion of FRP materials are favourable properties justifying the increase use of these composites in the structural upgrading [6].
The full wrapping FRP-technique is the most used to increase the load carrying capacity and the energy absorption capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. However, preliminary tests with concrete elements submitted to direct compressive loading revealed that partial wrapping (strips of CFRP sheets) is a promising confinement technique [7]. Since in concrete columns deserving strengthening intervention there are always a certain percentage of steel hoops, the application of CFRP strips in-between the existent steel hoops can be an adjusted confinement technique with technical and economical advantages, when full wrapping is taken for basis of comparison. To assess the efficacy of the partial wrapping technique, 108 prototypes of RC columns were confined by distinct CFRP arrangements and tested under direct compression. The experimental program was designed to evaluate the influence of the following variables on the compression behavior: stiffness of the wet lay-up CFRP sheet; distance between CFRP strips; width of the CFRP strip; number of CFRP layers per each strip; concrete strength; percentage of the steel longitudinal and tranversal reinforcement ratios. The present work describes the experimental program and presents and analyzes the obtained results. Using the obtained experimental results, the applicability of a confinement model [8] was appraised for the RC columns partially wrapped.degussa PortugalS&P Clever ReinforcementPRODEP action 5.3/N/199.014/01
Faixas de manta de CFRP no confinamento de elementos de pilar de betão armado
No presente trabalho de investigação
foram efectuadas séries de ensaios de
compressão uniaxial com elementos de
pilar de betão armado de 600 mm de altura
e com secção circular de 200 mm de
diâmetro, cintados com diferentes arranjos
de faixas de manta de fibras de carbono
(CFRP).

Partial versus full wrapping confinement systems for concrete columns
The present work aims to compare the confinement efficacy of full and partial wrapping of concrete elements under compression loads. The Mander et al. analytical model was modified to predict the compression stress-strain behaviour of concrete column elements partially confined by strips of CFRP lay-up sheets. The main results of the experimental program are presented and analysed. The model performance is assessed using the experimental results.MBT Bettor Portugal, S&P Clever Reinforcement. Role of Striatal-Enriched Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (STEP) in the control of microglial
Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) are key regulatory factors in inflammatory signaling pathways. The central nervous system has as resident immune cells the microglial cells, which participate in the initiation and propagation of the inflammatory response. STriatal-Enriched Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (STEP) is a central nervous system specific phosphatase encoded by the PTPN5 gene. STEP mRNA is alternatively spliced into the membrane-associated STEP61 and the cytosolic STEP46. Accumulating evidence implicates STEP dysregulation in the molecular basis of several neuropsychiatric disorders. Published data about STEP, focus on expression and role at the neuronal level. To our knowledge, there are no published data on the expression of STEP by microglial cells or on the regulation of microglial reactivity by this phosphatase.
Our results from PCR analysis show the expression of STEP mRNA in primary cultures of microglia obtained from rat brain. STEP expression was further confirmed by the immunocytochemical analysis and Western blot. On the other hand, STEP expression levels appear to be regulated by exposure to inflammatory stimuli. Microglia cultures exposed to the pro-inflammatory agent lipopolysaccharide (LPS) showed increased levels of STEP61 and STEP46. To examine the role of STEP in the control of microglia reactivity induced by LPS, we used a specific pharmacological inhibitor of STEP (TC-2153). STEP inhibition significantly reduced the number of microglial cells expressing inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and the number of phagocytic cells quantified after LPS stimulation. On the other hand, inhibition of STEP did not significantly affect the nitric oxide (NO) release and the expression of Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1ß) or tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa). Taken together, our results show that STEP is expressed by cells that do not belong to the neuronal lineage and suggest that STEP participates in some of the pathways involved in microglia reactivity.
Phase transition and critical end point driven by an external magnetic field in asymmetric quark matter
The location of the critical end point (CEP) in the QCD phase diagram is
determined under different scenarios. The effect of strangeness, isospin/charge
asymmetry and an external magnetic field is investigated. The discussion is
performed within the 2+1 flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with Polyakov loop.
It is shown that isospin asymmetry shifts the CEP to larger baryonic chemical
potentials and smaller temperatures. At large asymmetries the CEP disappears.
However, a strong enough magnetic field drives the system into a first order
phase transition.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures; PRD versio
The QCD critical end point driven by an external magnetic field in asymmetric quark matter
The effect of the isospin/charge asymmetry and an external magnetic field in
the location of the critical end point (CEP) in the QCD phase diagram is
investigated. By using the 2+1 flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with Polyakov
loop (PNJL), it is shown that the isospin asymmetry shifts the CEP to larger
baryonic chemical potentials and smaller temperatures, and in the presence of a
large enough isospin asymmetry the CEP disappears. Nevertheless, a sufficiently
high external magnetic field can drive the system into a first order phase
transition again.Comment: Contribution to the "20th Particles and Nuclei International

Application of eurocodes 0 and 1 - comparison with sia 260 and 261 swiss standards
The structural safety is one of the most important issues in construction. In order to ensure this safety there is a need to provide the appropriate carrying capacity to the structure. One of the initial stages of the design process is the quantification and combination of the different actions.
Eurocodes 0 and 1 (EN 1990, EN 1991) are concerned by defining the basis of structural design and the actions that should normally be considered in the design of buildings and civil engineering works such as imposed load, wind and snow loads, and have brought a consistency of methodologies for structural design across European Union. Switzerland is one of the few countries in Europe which is not included in European Union, and that continues to follow internal standards, the SIA - Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects.
Current investigation involved the comparative study of the requirements for safety and serviceability limit states, load combination format, and partial safety factors as well as the main actions to be considered for the structural design and verification. Both codes of practice are analyzed and compared for the different actions. An automatic calculation computer program was also developed during this study in order to estimate the values of the different actions.
Finally, a real building was modelled so as to validate the above mentioned program and to analyze the main differences between European and Swiss codes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
